Golden Oldies

For those of you visiting Rubislaw today from afar, or if you have just moved into the area you may not be aware of the opportunity to continue with Rugby when you are over 35 by playing Golden Oldies Rugby and  for our local supporters, you can get involved as well by emailing

While still abiding by World Rugby Laws, Golden Oldies Rugby has a few variations – the games have shortened playing times, there is unlimited substitution, over aggressive play o NOT condoned, age is shown by the colour of shorts one wears, as any over 60’s player cannot be tackled! You also play in a festival, not a tournament, in the spirit of fun, friendship and fraternity.

In 2015, Scottish Golden Oldies Rugby, in conjunction with three Media Students from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, created a DVD, ‘Golden Oldies Rugby – an Introduction’, which can be found on YouTube.

Aberdeen Strollers were Scotland’s only team at the world and European festivals from 1985 until the World Golden Oldies Rugby Festival came to Edinburgh in 2008 when about 20 new or reformed Scottish teams participated. To maintain this legacy, the 1st Scottish Golden Oldies Rugby Festival took place at Perthshire RFC in the spring of 2009 and the 8th Scottish Golden Oldies Rugby Festival took place at Strathmore RFC in May 2016. The 9th SGOR Festival takes place at Ellon RFC on May 6th 2017.

Below are some of the many festivals coming up, if you are interested in any please contact:

Ellon RFC, 6 May 2017

Lisbon, 14-18 June 2017

Aberdeen Grammar, 5-6 May 2018

A Scottish Touring XV is being formed to participate in the Lisbon Festival and individuals or groups of players are most welcome for both the European and Scottish Festivals. If you are 35 years of age or over and wish to find out more about playing for the Golden Oldies, please give me a call. Why not join us on Facebook?
